What Is a Trust & Why It Exists

A trust is a legal arrangement in which one party (the trustee) holds and manages property for the benefit of another (the beneficiary), established by a third (the settlor/grantor). Trusts exist to separate legal ownership from beneficial enjoyment — useful for estate planning, asset protection, and management of property. This lesson establishes the accurate fundamentals of trust law.
